The Coffee Shop, Manor Green School, Maidenhead, Berkshire

Manor Green School is a large special school in Maidenhead, where one of our coffee machines was recently purchased by Friends of Manor Green School Charitable Trust, as a way to promote their sixth form students with real experience of employment.

The school opened a café, which provides long term consistent work experience for some 25 students whose learning difficulties previously prevented them from being able to engage in all-year-round supported employment.

The coffee shop provides sandwiches, wraps and flapjacks, some of which are produced by the school’s catering supplier, as well as a range of hot drinks from our machine.

In view of the diverse range of students’ abilities, the coffee machine chosen had to be one that was easily managed; the aim being to enable students to be able to serve coffees, fill, clean and maintain the machine independently of staff. It was clear that a complicated barista type machine was not appropriate.

Dawn Price, the School Business Manager, explained that she sought the testimonials from other schools on the Espresso Essential website and found them helpful and encouraging, leading her to order a tasting demo before eventually deciding to buy from us.

Dawn told us “The smart car with the demonstration machine arrived. We called over anyone we could who was on site that day; a couple of staff members, the site team and even the postman. We asked them to taste the coffees and give their opinion. Positive comments resulted in us deciding to buy from Espresso Essential.

The machine is expensive but it is beginning to make us some money. The initial purchase cost of the machine was covered by the Charitable Trust Fund at the school. The main reason for us buying the machine was not its profitability, but its ease of use.

We are really pleased with the machine. The students are using it very effectively and we have developed a step by step photographic handbook so that they can operate it independently of adult help.

Staff members use the cafe during their lunch break. It is just across the car park from the school building, so it provides a pleasant atmosphere and a real break from work for them. It is also used by parents who just want to meet up for mutual support. The local NHS Primary Care Trust staff sometimes pop in and whenever we hold training sessions, the coffee shop is a place in which to relax during breaks.

The coffee machine has become the heart of the café. In fact, the café is so successful we may need to move it to larger premises. Best of all, our students can use their work experience as part of the ASDAN customer services award and achieve a qualification to be proud of.”
